Laguna Beach began as a plein air painters' colony in the early 1900s, and that origin still shapes everything about it. The city deliberately limited development, preserved its canyon greenbelt, and resisted the uniformity that reshaped so much of the Southern California coastline. The result is a town of genuine visual character: winding streets, cottages tucked into hillsides, and a downtown that opens directly onto Main Beach and Heisler Park. Surrounding it, Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and Aliso & Wood Canyons preserve thousands of acres of open space directly behind the city.

Days here are shaped by which cove you choose. Victoria Beach with its landmark tower, Thousand Steps, Crescent Bay, Shaw's Cove, and Treasure Island each draw their own regulars. Heisler Park's blufftop walk connects several of them and remains the best sunset in Orange County. Inland, the trail networks at Laguna Coast Wilderness and Top of the World deliver serious hiking and mountain biking minutes from downtown. The community is walkable, artistic, and deeply protective of its character, and residents participate accordingly, from the summer festivals to the ongoing conservation work.
Laguna's dining scene ranges from oceanfront institutions to genuinely ambitious modern cooking. Broadway by Amar Santana and Selanne Steak Tavern anchor the upper end downtown, while Driftwood Kitchen and Las Brisas trade on the views. Zinc Cafe has been the daytime gathering spot for decades. Retail runs almost entirely independent, with art galleries lining Forest Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, joined by boutiques, jewelers, and surf shops. Chain stores are effectively absent by design.
Summer belongs to the festivals: the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters, the Sawdust Art Festival, and Art-A-Fair all run July through August and collectively define the city's calendar. Year-round, the Laguna Art Museum focuses on California art, and the Laguna Playhouse is one of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the country. My connection to Laguna Beach goes back generations. My grandparents lived in Blue Lagoon, and I spent several summers living with them and growing up on these beaches. My grandfather practiced dentistry from an office on Glenneyre Street in downtown Laguna for more than forty years, so this town has been part of my family's story for most of a lifetime. The Sawdust Art Festival and the Pageant of the Masters were summer traditions for me as a kid, long before I understood what they meant to this town.
I came back to Laguna professionally, too. Before I moved into real estate, I was the Executive General Manager of Las Brisas, leading 178 employees and six managers through a complete reinvention of the restaurant: a full remodel, redesign, and update from the ground up. It was the last chapter of my twenty-one years in restaurants, and the standards I learned running that house on the bluff are the same ones I bring to representing clients here.
